P-license rental questions
Can P-license holders rent MTC cars?
Yes! P-plate holders (probationary licence) can rent MTC vehicles, with the same rental process and insurance as full licence holders. The deposit for a probationary licence is HK$5,000. While driving, display P plates at the front and rear, keep to 70 km/h or below, and stay out of the offside (rightmost) lane on expressways with 3 or more lanes.
What documents do I need?
You need a Hong Kong ID card and a valid driving license. Verification is usually completed within 24 hours after submitting your documents through the app.
Is insurance included?
Yes, every trip is insured. If there's an accident, the most you pay is HK$40,000, or HK$60,000 if there's both damage to the car and a third-party claim. The cap doesn't apply if the terms are broken (e.g. drink-driving or an unauthorised driver). Details are in section 7 of the Terms of Use.
What rules apply to P-plate drivers?
Under Transport Department rules, a probationary driver must display P plates at the front and rear, keep to 70 km/h or below, and stay out of the offside (rightmost) lane on expressways with 3 or more lanes. There is no passenger limit in a private car; that rule applies to motorcycles and motor tricycles.
