The single biggest difference between MTC and a traditional rental counter is what happens before your first trip. There is no counter, no queue, and no paperwork at pickup — because verification happens once, in the app, before you book. Do it well and every rental after that is genuinely instant: open the app, pick a car, drive.

This guide covers exactly what you need, why some verifications get rejected, and how to sail through on the first attempt.

What you need

Two documents, photographed inside the app during signup:

• Hong Kong ID card — your physical card, not a photocopy or a phone photo of a photocopy.
• Valid driving licence — full licence or P-plate. New drivers are welcome at MTC: a provisional licence goes through exactly the same process, with the same insurance included.

You'll also add a payment method (credit or debit card) for the deposit and fares. That's the entire list — no utility bills, no bank statements, no guarantors.

How the process works

1. Download the MTC app and create your account.
2. Photograph both documents when prompted — the app guides the framing.
3. Submit and wait for review. Most accounts are verified within 24 hours; you'll get a push notification the moment you're approved.
4. Book immediately. Once approved, there is no per-booking re-verification. Walk up to a car and scan the QR code, request delivery, or reserve a station pickup — verification never blocks you again.

The five photo mistakes that cause rejections

Almost every rejected verification comes down to the photos, not the person. Avoid these and you'll almost certainly pass first time:

1. Blur — hold the phone still and let it focus before shooting.
2. Glare — HKID cards are reflective; tilt the card away from overhead lights.
3. Cropped corners — all four corners of the document must be visible in frame.
4. Expired documents — check your licence's expiry date before submitting.
5. Mismatched details — the name on your account should match your documents.

If a submission doesn't go through, fix the photo and resubmit in the app — it's a retake, not a penalty. Still stuck? Message the team on WhatsApp and a human will look at your submission directly.

P-plate drivers: you're included

MTC is deliberately P-license friendly. The verification process, deposit, and comprehensive insurance are identical to a full licence. Two things to remember on the road: Hong Kong law limits P-plate drivers to one passenger (unless accompanied by a driver with 3+ years' experience), and if you'd like a P-plate magnet for the car, contact the team after booking and they'll arrange it.

After approval: what "instant" actually means

Verification is the only gate. Once you're through it:

• Scan & drive — walk up to any MTC car, scan the QR code on the window, and start driving. No reservation needed.
• Station pickup — see a car at a nearby station in the app, reserve it, and pick it up right away.
• Delivery — have a car brought to your chosen carpark, typically within 30–60 minutes.

Your documents only need attention again if your licence expires or your details change.

Verify now, not the night before

The practical tip that saves the most frustration: verify when you download the app, not when you need a car. A 24-hour review window doesn't matter on a Tuesday afternoon; it matters a lot at 9am on the Saturday of your planned Lantau day trip.
