Inside MTC's 130-Station Carpark Network

Most car rental in Hong Kong revolves around a handful of branches. MTC took the opposite approach: instead of a few counters, the network is built on more than 130 connected carparks spread across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories — the same multi-storey carparks you already walk past every day.

That structural choice is what makes the service feel different. Here's how to use the network well.

What a "station" actually is

An MTC station is a partner carpark with designated MTC bays. There's no staff desk and no keys — the cars live in ordinary carparks near where people actually are: residential estates, shopping centres, business districts and transport hubs. The app's live map shows every station and which cars are sitting at each one right now.

Because stations are real carparks, pickup is sheltered from the weather, lifts take you straight up from street level, and you're never hunting for street parking to start your trip.

Three ways to get a car

1. Station pickup — open the map, find a station with an available car, reserve it, and walk over. If the car's there, it's yours immediately.
2. Scan & drive — already standing next to an MTC car? Scan the QR code on the window and drive off. No reservation at all.
3. Delivery — nowhere near a station? Have a car delivered to your chosen carpark, typically within 30–60 minutes.

One honest note on pricing: picking up at a station carpark carries a HK$100 base fare (versus HK$80 elsewhere) — that premium is what keeps cars positioned inside convenient covered carparks instead of scattered on distant streets. After the base fare it's the same HK$1/minute with the same HK$800 24-hour cap.

Any-station return: the real superpower

You do not return the car where you found it. Any MTC station is a valid drop-off. End your Sai Kung day trip at a station in Kowloon; take a car from Central and leave it near home in the New Territories. Park in a designated MTC bay, lock with the app, photograph the parked car when prompted, and the trip ends there.

This is the feature that changes trip planning most. One-way journeys stop being a taxi-only affair, and "getting the car back" stops dictating your route home.

Reading the map like a regular

• Coverage bands: the network is densest on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon's core, with strong New Territories coverage around major town centres and the airport corridor on Lantau.
• Check the destination side too. Before a one-way trip, glance at stations near your endpoint so you know exactly where you'll drop the car.
• Availability is live. Cars move all day; the map is the truth. If your preferred station is empty, the next one is rarely far — or scan whatever MTC car is parked closest.
• Station thumbnails in the app show the actual carpark entrance, which saves the classic five-minute "which building is it" loop on first visits.

Why carparks and not kerbs

Hong Kong kerbside space is scarce and hostile: no-stopping zones, towing, typhoon seasons. Basing the fleet inside established carparks means the cars are legal, sheltered and predictable — and the bays are where the app says they are. It's a less flashy choice than scattering cars across streets, and it's why the handover works the same at 8am on a weekday and 2am on a Sunday.

Make it yours

Open the map, find your two or three "home stations" — the ones near where you live and work — and the network stops being 130 dots and becomes your personal fleet. The car is a lift ride away, the return is wherever you end up, and the counter never existed.
