The 24-Hour Cap, Explained with Real Numbers

MTC charges by the minute — HK$1 per minute of rental. That sounds like a meter that never stops, until you meet the number that changes everything: the meter is capped at HK$800 per 24 hours. Drive for two hours or twenty-four, the meter portion of your fare can never pass HK$800.

This one rule quietly turns a per-minute service into the most flexible day rental in Hong Kong. Here's how the maths actually works.

The formula

Your fare has two parts:

• Base fare — HK$80 when you walk up to a car or have one delivered to a street meter; HK$100 when it is delivered to an MTC station carpark.
• Meter — HK$1 per minute, capped at HK$800 per 24-hour window.

The break-even point is easy to remember: HK$800 ÷ HK$1/min = 800 minutes, or about 13.3 hours. Rent for less than that and you simply pay by the minute; rent for longer and the cap takes over — every minute after 13.3 hours is effectively free until the 24-hour window resets.

Three worked examples

The two-hour errand. IKEA run, airport pickup, a big grocery shop. 120 minutes × HK$1 + HK$100 base (delivered to a station) = HK$220. The cap never enters the picture — you just pay for what you used.

The half-day (6 hours). Lunch in Sai Kung, a hike, back by dinner. 360 minutes + HK$100 base = HK$460. Still under the cap, still purely by the minute.

The full day (24 hours). Pick up Saturday 11am, return Sunday 11am. The meter runs to HK$800 and stops. With the station-delivery base fare, your total is HK$900 — whether you drove 14 hours or kept the car parked outside a beach house all afternoon. (Tolls, tunnels and parking are always separate, whoever you rent from.)

Against a conventional daily rental

A traditional day rental makes you commit to the full day price the moment you book — even if plans shrink. The cap works the other way round: you only arrive at the day price if you actually use the day.

• Return early? A "day rental" that turned into 5 hours costs you HK$400 at MTC, not the full-day rate.
• Run long? You won't tiptoe past a return deadline into a second-day charge; the cap absorbs it until the window resets.
• No forms at a counter either way — the whole thing runs from the app, and you can return at any MTC station or street meter rather than the branch you came from.

The honest comparison: if you know you'll use a car hard for several consecutive days, a weekly package from a traditional firm can still win. For everything up to and including a full day out — which is most real-world rentals — the cap structure means you never overpay for time you didn't use.

Tips to get the most from the cap

1. Think in windows, not days. The cap applies per 24-hour window from your start time. A Saturday-noon to Sunday-noon trip is one capped window — often nicer than two calendar "days".
2. Long idle time is fine. Parked at the beach for four hours? The meter is capped anyway on a full-day trip; the parked hours don't punish you.
3. Return anywhere. Ending your day on the other side of Hong Kong? Drop the car at whichever MTC station or metered street space is closest and stop the clock there.
4. Watch the fare live. The app shows your running fare in real time — no arithmetic, no surprises at the end.

The short version

Under ~13 hours: pay by the minute, keep it cheap. Over ~13 hours: the HK$800 cap takes over and the rest of the day is on us. Either way you start with a base fare of HK$80–100 and end with no counter, no paperwork, and a return at any station or street meter.
